Price Was Wrong

I don't want to put it all on the Habs young goaltender.
Clearly it wasn't all his fault, but the numbers are startling.
Price has managed just 7 wins in his last 27 games, 19 of a possible 54 points.
Jaroslav Halak on the other hand has been a winner 13 wins in his last 22, 26 of a possible 44 points.
Those numbers stacked look like this
Price 7-15-5
Halak 13-9-0
What's wrong with this picture?
Not to mention that Halak's brilliance in that 4 game stretch in which he saved his lacklustre teamates was the only reason this bunch made the playoffs in the first place certainly would leave any Hab fan scratching his head.

It's not new for a professional sports team to hang on to their original thought through thick and thin.
The #1 draft choice still getting promoted ahead of the walk on who's putting up better numbers.

Would you keep #1 draft choice Jimmy Waite instead of Dominic Hasek?
Chicago did.
Sure they had Ed Belfour, but still.
Of course Eddie did win a Stanley Cup, just not with the Hawks.

This year the Hawks got it right.
They didn't live and die with the big free agent (Cristobal Huet), they put their most important games in the trapper and blocker of a free agent that was supposed to be gone by midseason.

Baseball's Real Dirty Secret

I wanted so much to leave all the crap behind.
I won't think of the steroid stuff very much while I'm actually enjoying a game this summer.
I really won't.
When some beefy hitter drills an otherworldly fastball nine miles,I won't sit back and think just how many syringe fulls it might have taken for either pro to deliver the goods.
Am I in denial?
I don't think so.
I'm not lying to myself, I just can't tell the bad guys from the good.
I've been around the game a good long time so I knew what was going on even if I didn't have de facto info on exactly who was doing what.

That's not what I wanted to write about however.

It's baseball's other dirty secret.
It started before steroids. Before Tim Raines, Keith Hernandez, Steve Howe and all the rest of the snorters gave baseball a black eye in the 90's.
Or should I say a white nose?
Before Jim Bouton's Ball Four exposed plenty including the prevalence of greenies or amphetamines in Major league clubhouses.
It started before they allowed African Americans into Major League baseball.
And it reared its ugly head again this week.

Alcohol has long been more than tolerated in the game.
A cold one has always been part of the post game.As Bouton once quoted his manager Joe Schultz after a post game speech:"Now go pound that Budweiser" !

I have seen teammates fight because of it.
I have seen a team plane fill with popcorn.
I know decent careers that have ended because of it.
Tony Larussa fell asleep at the wheel at a traffic light, and one of his pitchers died last year in a car crash caused by it.

The latest bits of news remind us that while some of us can have a drink and go home,
others are consumed.
Nobody could figure out why Bret Boone went from a 35 homer, 117 RBI all star second baseman,to unemployed in two years.
Now we know as he tries to comeback with Washington.
The Nationals of course have his dad Bob in their administration.
Bret back after a stint in rehab.
More disturbing however was the Cardinals swift release of utility infielder Scott Spiezio. He was charged with essentially crashing his car in December, leaving the scene of the crime, going home and beating up his neighbor.
You would think that Spiezio would have learned something last summer.
The late Josh Hancock was his friend.

“We anticipate a successful resolution to this misdemeanor matter,”
attorney Paul Meyer said.

Lovely.

Asked about Spiezio’s release, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said,
“I think it’s a consistent message about what the team represents.”
What does the team represent Mr. I fell asleep at a traffic stop?
Maybe we can ask you at Busch Stadium.

Wrong Again !

It's truly amazing how many times I've been wrong lately.
Apparently the Gazette has stopped counting since the NFL pool came to a close so
there's no official total.
How many times I've been wrong about Carey Price alone is astounding.

I originally argued that if he was the best goaltender in camp than he should not only win a job with the team but that he should win THE job.
The Habs I thought should trade Cristobal Huet, get what they could and use the money elsewhere.
What else should you do with a team that wasn't going to make the playoffs.
Whoops !
Well, Cristobal proved essential in a run at the vaunted Senators after Price got sent to the minors.
Ride the Huet wave !
And...back comes Price.
Let me know who wins game 82 and let's really get going.

According to my morning show mates,
I'm also wrong on the subject of whether a tough guy is needed for protection.
They say yes, I say no.
As we crawl towards the trading deadline, this team desperately needs another top six forward
and somebody who can either win a faceoff or teach others how to do it.

I thought it rather amusing to read the New York papers recently to find out that others need protection from those big bad Habs.
The Rangers being in the market for that same elusive tough guy to handle the Mike Komisarek's of the world from beating up
on the likes of Jaromir Jagr.

And by the way, when was the last time a team pushed the Habs into a loss ?

Have I mentioned lately that I think Roger Clemens is a liar ?
Okay so I wasn't wrong about everything.
I think those that think him guilty might have to settle with him simply being left out of baseball's Hall Of Fame.
Unless they get more on him and Bonds, neither will go to prison.

Thank goodness It's almost time to make baseball picks again.
A year is a long time to go without being right.

Aren't you glad you came with me with that New England Patriots pick in the Super Bowl ?

Can I play golf yet ?

Shameless plug #1:
Why not join me at the Ile Perrot Golf Club this summer.
You won't find a better deal at any private club in or near the city:
http://www.ileperrotgolf.com/docs.htm?kw=index

Shameless plug #2:
Win a trip for 4 to Myrtle Beach, golf, hotel and local attractions thrown in
name and email here, that's it:
www.mycondotels.com

Shameless plug #3
you can come read my baseball columns and soon will be able to watch my online baseball show once again:

For you basketball fans:
You really need to tune in Wednesday mornings at 9:25 when we talk with Dwight Walton.
If we had a market as big as the U.S. ,
He would be a big media star and could give up his day job.
He is that good, that natural without any formal training in radio.
Was that another shameless plug ?

What have you done with Alex Kovalev and who's this guy that has taken over in his place ?

YouTube Wins Superskills

Folks past a certain age are always suspected of being behind the times when it comes to modern technology.
Back in the day when the VCR was first invented, the joke was always that those people always had 12 o'clock flashing.
They were so behind the teckie times that they couldn't even set the clock, let alone program a future recording.

I am not from that generation.
I am sure I was way ahead of the curve when it came to the computer and the internet.
It took me 2 years of searching before I finally bought my first in 1993.
I bothered my friend Richard, a professor of such things at Bryant University in Rhode Island so often that he finally told me if I kept waiting for the ultimate in newness, I might as well wait forever.

It is with this information that I tell you that I still live in a VCR world.
No DVD recorder, no Tivo.
Right now I'm trying to keep up with golf technology and 2 kids.

As Saturday night unfolded, I decided to 'TAPE' the superskills competition on CBC from Hockey Night in Canada.

I smartly checked the TV times which is always 99 and 44/100 % purely accurate.
It read:
NHL Superskills 7:00 to 9 P.M.
Lousy TV movie starts at 9.
So I set the recording for those 2 hours and watched other stuff with my wife.

When the other stuff ended, I popped in the Superskills tape.
As boredom set in.
Saucer passes, YAWN...Fastest skater, DOUBLE YAWN...Accuracy shooting...SNORE !

Fast forward, that's what I'll do...Yeah !
The new contest...The breakaway fancy shot, showoff thing!

Fast forward....Fast forward...Fast forward.
Oh No!

Who’s the techno goof now?
Why could I have ever thought that they'd pull this 2 hour show off in 2 hours?
Didn't even get a sniff of the competition.

Off to the Net!
It's almost midnight, and it's not on line...Not CBC, not nhl.com.

Sunday morning and I’ve got to see it.
CBC...the best they can do is a 4 minute hi lites package of finalists Ryan Getzlaf and Alexandre Ovechkin.
NHL.com...The breakaway shootout buried in a 13 minute package including other events.
Versus..The NHL right holder in the U.S. had a few hi lites of the best in the event.
CBC,NHL,Versus...thanks for next to nothing.

YouTube had it all, from start to finish in 2 files.

Note to NHL:
I know you wanted a YouTube moment, but you didn't have to make people go there to find it !

Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire

Maybe Roger Clemens is telling the truth.
He looks so damn convincing.
But I don't believe him.
I don't believe anybody.
There's only one person that I'm absolutely sure never used performance enhancing drugs.
ME !!!

I'm glad the young Habs I have always believed in are stepping it up.
Christopher Higgins, Thomas Plekanec, Guillaume Latendresse, Andrei Kostitsyn.
Always said, let the kids play.
It takes time.
Once again, wait for the 3 stages.
I hope I can, I think I can, I know I can.
Thought however Carey Price would be part of it all.
Still think so, just not so fast I guess.

At least Bob Gainey doesn't have to worry about being booed
the night his number is retired.

I love upsets when it comes to NFL playoff football
but it can't get any better than a championship Sunday of
Colts at New England and Packers at Dallas.
That would mean 4 home victories this weekend.

I'm not hoping for upsets in golf this year.
Go Tiger.
You either love him or hate him and unless Mike Weir grabs a major or two this year
I'd like to see Tiger take a run at the slam.

All this wasted knowledge and nowhere to dispense it.
I love the NBA, probably know more about it than the NHL now but it doesn't seem that many care about these parts.
At least we get one chance a week to talk hoops with the big man Dwight Walton on the team 990's morning show...
(Wednesday at 9:25 for you Hoop heads)
My surprise special to start the year was the New Orleans Hornets.
They won't win the west but they're getting better.
Who saw Portland coming ?
Lost 50 games last year, lost the first pick in the draft before the season and now this.

Said it before.
I'll say it again...Andre Dawson was a Hall of famer.
Rookie of the year
MVP once....2nd for the award twice.
Top 10 in batting average 5 times.
8 gold gloves.
45th all time in hits
44th in doubles
35th in homers
32nd in RBI
22nd in extra base hits
314 career stolen bases on those knees.
Didn't hit in 2 NLCS.

Ch Ch Ch Ch Changes - Turn And Face The Strain

Let me say this up front:
I am a fan of Saku Koivu.
I have been a fan of his on ice exploits over the years
and a bigger fan of his off ice magic that has helped so many.
However, now might be the time.
In listening to Pierre McGuire with Melnick last week, I was struck by Pierre's comments about the machinations of a trade in the NHL.
To paraphrase:
It has to be an eye opener, something that will make the room feel a shock.
Safe to say you know where I'm going with this.

It's not just a lack of production (One five on five goal),
It's leadership, the future of this team's leadership.
Christopher Higgins & Mike Komisarek are the future in that area,
you can hear it from Higgins and it leaves one to wonder
what we'd be hearing if he didn't have Koivu standing in his way.

It's not about 3 losses in a row or 5 losses in 6 games or whatever the latest is.
It's about the future.
Maybe not today, maybe not next week but it is inevitable.

NEXT !
Guy Carbonneau !
Get off this Guy's back will ya.
Especially you people who picked this team to miss the playoffs.
Right now he's doing better than you did.
It's his ass on the line.
If you're wrong, you'll just predict again until you get it right.
If he's wrong, he'll get fired.
I don't think there's a coach in the NHL who's moves you would agree with 100% of the time,
up until this point, I think he's done pretty well with what he was given.
Which brings us to:

BOB GAINEY !!!

I wasn't impressed when he went out and spent his money on Brian Smolinski, Tom Kostopoulis and Patrice Brisebois.
If this team was going to play as I suspected..(and early on I must admit they've done better)
than they would be better served letting the kids get used to the NHL.
They underestimated Kyle Chipchura, sent Ryan O'Byrne & Maxim Lapierre to the minors,
and made a forward of a bad contract in Mathieu Dandenault.
AND as I said last summer, I would have traded Cristobal Huet.
Price and Halak.
Let the kids learn up here...All of them.
Another Kostitsyn anyone ?

Bonds Will Walk Again

He is baseball's all time leader in walks and while he may never play another game in the major leagues, Bonds will add at least one more to his total.
He'll get a pass on all charges levied by a grand jury this week.
Bonds was charged with four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction by federal prosecutors at a California District Court in San Francisco.
Each of the perjury charges carries a jail sentence of up to five years, while the obstruction charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years.

This all boils down to Barry's statement before the grand jury:"I have never knowingly taken steroids".
This won't be about proving he took them.
Most of us have no problem believing that to be a fact.
This won't be completely about how the samples of his positive test were collected.
That, like the O.J. case, won't be pretty.
This won't even be about whether he really DID know he was taking steroids.
It will be about proving his statement untrue.
PROVE that he didn't know.
How are they going to do that ?

When asked in court about the papers that clearly showed his positive test, Bonds responded by saying:"I've never seen that report before".
So, what has changed since Barry made that statement ?
Who is ready to testify to the contrary ?
His buddy and former personal trainer Greg Anderson was coincidentally released from prison the same day that the indictment came down.
He spent a year in prison rather than give Barry up.
The government seems to think they now have enough information or the right canary to make their case now.

We were told in the Michael Vick case that the feds would never go forward unless they had the goods.
That it's a rare time that when they do move in that they don't get a conviction.
This isn't the Los Angeles district attorney's office.
Johnny Cochrane has passed on.
I'm not a lawyer.
I don't even play one on TV.
But if I was, I think I might have an easier time defending him than prosecuting.
Regardless of my opinion of that jerk !
